The amount of foreign remittances sent to Sri Lanka by Sri Lankans employed overseas during the first two months of this year has increased by 32% compared to the same period in 2025.
During the first two months of 2026, Sri Lankan migrant workers sent US$ 1,480.1 million (approximately US$ 1.4 billion) to the country. In comparison, the remittances received during the same period in 2025 amounted to US$ 1,121 million.
In February 2026 alone, migrant workers sent US$ 729 million to Sri Lanka, while the amount received in February 2025 was US$ 548.1 million. Accordingly, a significant increase in foreign remittances has been recorded in February 2026 compared to February last year.
Meanwhile, 47,819 Sri Lankans left the country for foreign employment during the first two months of this year. In addition, 3,241 Sri Lankan workers registered with the Bureau of Foreign Employment for overseas jobs between March 1 and March 9.
